Why he felt unworthy to host Jesus: LORD, I AM NOT WORTHY TO HAVE YOU COME
What he understood about Christ's authority: ONLY SAY THE WORD, AND MY SERVANT WILL BE HEALED
The subject was a Roman centurion stationed at Capernaum whose treasured servant was sick and near death. Though a Gentile, he loved the Jewish people and had built them a synagogue.
He sent elders of the Jews to Jesus, pleading that He come and heal the servant, and they urged that the man was worthy of this help.
As Jesus drew near the house, the subject sent friends to say he was not worthy to have the Lord come under his roof, and that Jesus need only say the word and his servant would be healed.
For he understood authority: as a man under command who himself commanded soldiers, saying go and he goes, come and he comes, so he trusted that Christ had only to speak and it would be done.
Jesus marveled and said to the crowd that He had not found such great faith even in Israel, foretelling that many would come from east and west to sit with Abraham in the kingdom. At that hour the servant was healed.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Great faith trusts the mere word of Christ, needing no other proof.
- True faith is often found among those the religious least expect.
- Humility that counts itself unworthy is precious in the eyes of the Lord.
