Remarks:

The subject is named among the twelve apostles as Simon the Zealot, or the Cananean, to set him apart from Simon Peter.

The title marks him as one who had belonged to, or shared the fervor of, the Zealots, the party burning with zeal for Israel's freedom and the law, ready to take up arms against Rome.

Whatever fire had once driven him, Jesus called him and set him among the Twelve, alongside Matthew the former tax collector, a man the Zealots would have counted a traitor.

That two such opposite men could sit at one table shows how the Lord unites in Himself those the world would keep apart.
