Remarks:

The subject, also called Levi, sat at the tax booth in Capernaum, a trade despised among his people for serving Rome and enriching itself at their expense.

As Jesus passed by he said only, Follow me. The subject rose, left everything, and followed him, and became one of the twelve.

He held a great feast in his house, gathering tax collectors and sinners to meet the Lord. When the Pharisees objected, Jesus answered that he came not to call the righteous but sinners.

The subject bore witness with the apostles and, by long tradition, set down one of the four Gospels, written to show that Jesus is the promised King of the line of David.

His account opens with the genealogy of the Messiah and closes with the commission to make disciples of all nations. Tradition holds that he carried the gospel abroad and died a martyr.
