The trade that made his house lowly: A TANNER, WHOSE WORK WAS RECKONED UNCLEAN BY MANY
Where his house stood: BY THE SEA, WHERE PETER WENT UP TO PRAY ON THE ROOF
After Peter raised Tabitha at Joppa, he stayed on in the city for many days, lodging in the house of the subject, a tanner whose home stood by the sea.
The trade of a tanner, working constantly with the hides and carcasses of animals, was reckoned lowly and ceremonially unclean by many, so that it was no small thing for Peter to make his home there.
It was on the rooftop of the subject's house that Peter went up to pray at midday and fell into a trance, seeing the sheet let down from heaven with all manner of creatures and hearing the voice tell him to kill and eat.
There the messengers from Cornelius the centurion found Peter and asked him to come to Caesarea, and there the door to the Gentiles began to open.
The subject himself does no great deed and speaks no recorded word, yet his humble house by the sea became the very place where God prepared Peter to carry the gospel beyond Israel. Hospitality made room for revelation.
