Remarks:

The subject, son of Zebedee and elder brother of John, was called with him from mending nets. With Peter and John he formed the inner circle closest to the Lord.

Named a Son of Thunder, the subject once wished to call down fire on a village that refused Christ, and was rebuked. He and his brother sought the highest places in the kingdom, and were told they would indeed drink the Lord's cup.

The subject was present at the raising of Jairus's daughter, at the transfiguration where he saw the Lord's glory, and in Gethsemane during the agony.

After the resurrection and Pentecost the subject bore witness with the apostles in Jerusalem, sharing in the growth of the early church.

The subject was the first of the Twelve to be martyred, put to death with the sword by Herod Agrippa, fulfilling the word that he would drink his Master's cup.
