Remarks:

The subject, son of Zebedee and brother of James, was called from his fishing nets. With Peter and his brother he formed an inner circle, present at the raising of Jairus's daughter, the transfiguration, and Gethsemane.

Named a Son of Thunder, the subject reclined near the Lord at the last supper and is identified as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He followed to the courtyard and stood near the cross.

At the cross the subject was entrusted with the care of the Lord's mother. On the first day of the week he outran Peter to the empty tomb, saw the linen cloths, and believed.

The subject bore witness in Jerusalem and beyond, and is credited with a Gospel and letters proclaiming that God is love and that the Word became flesh.

Exiled to the island of Patmos for the testimony of Jesus, the subject received a revelation of things to come and wrote to the seven churches. By tradition he died in old age at Ephesus, the last surviving apostle.
