How he came to bear the cross: THE SOLDIERS COMPELLED HIM AS HE PASSED
Why his name was remembered: HIS SONS WERE KNOWN AMONG THE BELIEVERS
The subject was a man of Cyrene in North Africa, coming in from the country, likely a pilgrim up for the Passover, when he passed the procession leading Jesus out to be crucified.
Jesus, weakened by the scourging, could no longer bear the crossbeam, and the Roman soldiers seized the subject and compelled him to carry it behind the Lord to Golgotha.
So this stranger, chosen by no plan of his own, walked the road of sorrows bearing the cross of the Savior of the world.
The Gospel of Mark names him the father of Alexander and Rufus, evidently men known to the early believers, suggesting the subject and his household came to faith.
Paul later greets a Rufus and his mother in his letter to Rome, and the church has long remembered the passerby who literally took up the cross and followed, a picture of every disciple called to do the same.
