Why John had rebuked the marriage: IT IS NOT LAWFUL FOR YOU TO HAVE YOUR BROTHER'S WIFE
What she told her daughter to ask: THE HEAD OF JOHN THE BAPTIST ON A PLATTER
The subject had been the wife of Herod Philip, but she left him for his brother Herod Antipas. John the Baptist rebuked the unlawful union openly, saying it was not right for Antipas to have his brother's wife.
For this the subject held a grudge against John and wanted him put to death, but she could not, for Antipas feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe, though perplexed by his words.
Her opportunity came at Antipas's birthday feast. Her daughter danced before the king and his guests and pleased him, and he swore to give her whatever she asked, up to half his kingdom.
The girl went out to her mother and asked what she should request. The subject answered without hesitation: the head of John the Baptist. The girl hurried back and demanded it on a platter, at once.
The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oath and his guests he sent the executioner. John was beheaded in prison, his head brought on a platter and given to the girl, who gave it to her mother. A prophet fell to a woman's long-nursed hatred of the truth.

- Hatred of reproof hardens the heart toward murder.
- A grudge nursed in secret waits only for its moment.
- The truth that rebukes us is a mercy, not an enemy.
