Why he had John arrested: JOHN REBUKED HIM FOR TAKING HERODIAS
What Jesus called him: THAT FOX
The subject was a son of Herod the Great and tetrarch of Galilee. He had taken Herodias, his brother's wife, and John the Baptist rebuked him, saying it was not lawful for him to have her.
For this John was arrested. The subject feared John, knowing him a righteous and holy man, and liked to listen to him, though John's words left him greatly perplexed.
At his birthday feast the daughter of Herodias danced, and the subject swore to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter, and though grieved, for the sake of his oath and his guests he had John beheaded in the prison.
When Jesus's fame spread, the subject was perplexed, some saying John had risen. Jesus called him that fox, and warned that no prophet could perish away from Jerusalem.
At last, when Pilate sent Jesus to him during the trial, the subject was glad, hoping to see a sign, and questioned Him at length; but Jesus gave no answer. So the subject and his soldiers treated Him with contempt, mocked Him, dressed Him in splendid clothing, and sent Him back to Pilate.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- To hear the truth gladly and not obey it hardens the heart in the end.
- A rash oath and fear of others' opinion can lead to terrible sin.
- The Lord is silent before the scoffer who wants a sign, not repentance.
