What he was imprisoned for: INSURRECTION IN THE CITY, AND FOR MURDER
Whom the crowd chose over Jesus: AWAY WITH THIS MAN, AND RELEASE TO US BARABBAS
The subject was a notorious prisoner, held with the rebels who had committed murder in an insurrection. He lay under sentence of death when Jesus was brought before Pilate.
It was the governor's custom at the feast to release one prisoner whom the people requested. Pilate, seeing that Jesus had been handed over out of envy, offered them the choice between Jesus called the Christ and the subject.
The chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask for the subject instead. When Pilate asked what he should do with Jesus, they cried out all the more, Crucify Him.
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released the subject to them, and having scourged Jesus, delivered Him to be crucified. The guilty man walked free; the innocent man went to the cross.
The subject vanishes from the record the moment he is freed, yet his release stands as the clearest picture in the Gospels of substitution: a condemned sinner set at liberty because another took his place under the sentence of death.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- The guilty go free because the innocent takes their place.
- The cross is the great exchange: our condemnation for His life.
- Every sinner spared can see himself in the man set free.
