What he and Paul did at midnight in chains: PRAYING AND SINGING HYMNS TO GOD
His role in carrying the letters of the church: A FAITHFUL BROTHER, BY HIM I HAVE WRITTEN
The subject was a leading man among the brothers at Jerusalem and a prophet. When the council settled the question of the Gentiles, he was chosen with Judas Barsabbas to carry the letter to Antioch and to encourage the believers there.
When Paul and Barnabas parted, Paul chose the subject as his companion for the second missionary journey, and they went through Syria and Cilicia strengthening the churches.
At Philippi they were seized, beaten with rods, and thrown into the inner prison with their feet in the stocks. About midnight they were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening.
An earthquake shook the foundations, the doors opened, and every chain came loose. The jailer, about to kill himself, was stopped and asked what he must do to be saved; that night he and his household believed and were baptized.
The subject labored on at Thessalonica, Berea, and Corinth, and is named a faithful brother by Peter as well. In him the record shows a steady companion who bore suffering with joyful song.
