What kind of man he was: INTELLIGENT, SEEKING TO HEAR GOD'S WORD
What made him believe: THE TEACHING OF THE LORD, AND THE SIGN ON ELYMAS
The subject was the Roman proconsul of Cyprus, described as an intelligent man, who at Paphos summoned Barnabas and Saul because he wished to hear the word of God.
The sorcerer Elymas, who was with him, opposed the apostles and tried to turn the subject away from the faith.
But Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, rebuked the sorcerer and declared the hand of the Lord upon him, so that mist and darkness fell on him and he was blinded for a season, groping for a hand to lead him.
When the subject saw what had happened, he believed, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
He stands as one of the first Roman officials of rank recorded to have come to faith, a sign that the gospel would reach even the governing houses of the empire.
