What he warned his fellow tradesmen: THIS TRADE OF OURS MAY COME INTO DISREPUTE
The cry he set ringing for two hours: GREAT IS ARTEMIS OF THE EPHESIANS!
The subject was a silversmith of Ephesus who made silver shrines of Artemis, bringing no little business to the craftsmen. As Paul preached that gods made with hands are no gods at all, the trade began to suffer.
He gathered the workmen of like trade and warned them that not only was their livelihood in danger, but the temple of the great goddess Artemis might be counted as nothing and her magnificence destroyed, she whom all Asia and the world worshiped.
When they heard this they were enraged and cried out, Great is Artemis of the Ephesians. The city was filled with confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging Paul's companions with them.
For about two hours the crowd shouted the same cry, most not even knowing why they had come together. Paul wished to go in, but the disciples and even some officials would not let him.
At last the town clerk quieted the mob, warning that they were in danger of being charged with rioting without cause, and that grievances should be settled in the lawful courts. So he dismissed the assembly, and the uproar over the subject's trade came to nothing.
