The subject, a Jewish false prophet and magician also called Bar-Jesus, was found at Paphos in Cyprus with Sergius Paulus, the Roman proconsul, an intelligent man who summoned Barnabas and Saul to hear the word of God.
The subject, whose name Elymas means magician, opposed them and sought to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
But Saul, also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, You son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?
He declared that the hand of the Lord was upon him, and immediately mist and darkness fell on the subject, so that he groped about seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, astonished at the teaching of the Lord; and the judgment on the subject, like a temporary blindness, served to open the eyes of the ruler he had tried to keep in the dark.
