The subject was Shamgar the son of Anath, who arose in a time when Israel was oppressed and the main roads were abandoned, travelers keeping to winding paths for fear of their enemies.
With no army and no proper weapon, he took up an oxgoad, the long pointed stick used to drive cattle, the tool of an ordinary farmer.
With this alone he struck down six hundred Philistines, and by that deed he too saved Israel.
His name is remembered in the song of Deborah, which recalls the days of Shamgar son of Anath as a time when the highways were deserted and life in the land was hard.
Though only a verse or two records him, he stands among the judges the LORD raised up, a witness that God can deliver His people through the least likely person with the humblest of means.
