When Israel again did evil, the LORD gave them into the hand of Eglon king of Moab, who took the City of Palms and oppressed Israel eighteen years. The people cried out, and the LORD raised up the subject, a left-handed man of Benjamin, as their deliverer.
Israel sent tribute to Eglon by the subject's hand. He made a double-edged sword a cubit long and strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes, where no guard would think to search a left-handed man.
Having presented the tribute, the subject turned back and said he had a secret message for the king. Eglon dismissed his attendants and rose in his upper chamber, and the subject drew the hidden sword and thrust it into him.
The subject locked the doors and escaped while the servants delayed, thinking their master at rest. He sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and Israel came down after him.
The subject seized the fords of the Jordan against Moab and struck down about ten thousand of their strong men, and not one escaped. Moab was subdued under Israel, and the land had rest eighty years.
