Why his mother named him so: BECAUSE I BORE HIM IN PAIN
What he asked of the God of Israel: BLESS ME, ENLARGE MY BORDER, KEEP ME FROM HARM AND PAIN
Amid the long genealogies of Judah, the Chronicler pauses on the subject, noting that he was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, meaning pain, because she bore him in sorrow.
Though his lineage is barely traced, his prayer is preserved. The subject called on the God of Israel, asking that God would bless him indeed and enlarge his border.
He prayed further that God's hand would be with him, and that He would keep him from harm so that it might not bring him pain, turning even his name of sorrow toward hope.
The record adds simply that God granted what he asked. A single verse of petition, set among names and numbers, was heard in heaven and answered.
The subject stands as a quiet lesson embedded in the genealogy: a man remembered not for conquest or office, but for a bold and believing prayer to the God who hears.
