The subject, king of Assyria, came up against the fortified cities of Judah and took them, and sent his commanders to Jerusalem to demand its surrender from Hezekiah.
His field commander taunted the people on the wall, boasting that no god of any nation had delivered its land from Assyria, and that the LORD would be no different, and mocking any trust in Him.
Hezekiah took the threatening letter into the house of the LORD and spread it before Him, praying that all the kingdoms of the earth might know that the LORD alone was God. Isaiah sent word that the subject would not shoot an arrow into the city.
That night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp, and when the survivors rose in the morning, these were all dead bodies.
So the subject broke camp, withdrew, and returned to Nineveh. There, as he worshiped in the temple of his god, his own sons struck him down with the sword, and another reigned in his place.
