How far his evil went in Jerusalem: BURNED HIS SONS AND SHED INNOCENT BLOOD
What he knew when God restored him: THAT THE LORD, HE IS GOD
The subject came to the throne at twelve and reigned fifty-five years, longer than any king of Judah. He undid the reforms of his father Hezekiah, rebuilt the high places, and raised altars to Baal and the host of heaven, even within the temple.
He burned his sons as an offering, practiced sorcery and consulted mediums, and shed very much innocent blood, filling Jerusalem from end to end, and led Judah to do more evil than the nations the LORD had destroyed.
So the LORD brought against him the commanders of Assyria, who took him with hooks, bound him with fetters of bronze, and carried him to Babylon.
In his distress the subject sought the favor of the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, and prayed; and God was moved by his plea and brought him back to Jerusalem and his kingdom.
Then the subject knew that the LORD was God. He removed the foreign gods and idols, restored the altar of the LORD, and commanded Judah to serve Him, though the land had been long corrupted by his sin.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- No sinner is beyond the reach of God's mercy when he truly humbles himself.
- Distress can drive a hardened heart at last to seek the LORD.
- Repentance is real, yet the damage of long sin still leaves its mark.
