Why she left Peter standing outside: IN HER JOY SHE DID NOT OPEN THE GATE, BUT RAN IN TO TELL THEM
What the praying believers said to her: YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND; IT MUST BE HIS ANGEL
When Herod had killed James and imprisoned Peter, the church gathered at the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, and prayed earnestly through the night for the apostle.
That very night an angel led Peter out of the prison past the guards, and the chains fell from his hands. Coming to himself, he went to the house where the believers were praying and knocked at the outer gate.
The subject, a servant girl, came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she did not open the gate, but ran back inside to announce that Peter was standing there.
They told her she was out of her mind, and when she kept insisting, they said it must be his angel. But Peter kept knocking, and when at last they opened the door and saw him, they were amazed.
The subject, a lowly servant, was the first to know that the church's prayer had been answered, her joy so great it outran her sense. Her small, glad witness frames one of Scripture's clearest pictures of a praying church surprised by its own answered prayer.
