What he did on the first journey: LEFT PAUL AND BARNABAS AND WENT HOME
Paul's later word about him: HE IS USEFUL TO ME FOR MINISTRY
The subject was the son of Mary of Jerusalem, in whose house the church gathered to pray, and a cousin of Barnabas. He set out with Paul and Barnabas as their helper on the first missionary journey.
But at Perga in Pamphylia he left them and returned to Jerusalem, a desertion Paul did not forget.
When Paul and Barnabas planned a second journey, Barnabas wished to take the subject again, but Paul refused to take one who had turned back. The disagreement was so sharp that they parted, and Barnabas took the subject with him to Cyprus.
Under the patient care of Barnabas, and later close to Peter who called him his son, the subject grew into a trusted worker, and Peter sent greetings from him to the churches.
In the end Paul himself asked for the subject to be brought, saying he was useful to him for ministry, and it is this Mark whom the church has long held to be the writer of the second Gospel.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- An early failure need not be the final word on a life.
- Patient encouragement can restore the one others would write off.
- The Lord makes the restored deserter useful again for His service.
