His father's verdict on his life: UNSTABLE AS WATER, YOU SHALL NOT EXCEL
His plea to spare his brother: LET US NOT TAKE HIS LIFE
The subject was the firstborn of Jacob, born to Leah in Paddan-aram. As firstborn he held the place of pre-eminence and the double portion among the sons of Israel.
Yet he defiled his father's bed with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel heard of it. For this the birthright was taken from him and given to the sons of Joseph, though the record notes it without erasing his name.
When his brothers plotted to kill Joseph, the subject alone spoke to save him, urging that they not shed blood but cast him into a pit, meaning to rescue him later and restore him to their father.
Returning to find the pit empty, he tore his clothes in grief, crying that the boy was gone and asking where he could turn. Years later in Egypt he offered his own sons as surety for Benjamin's safe return.
On his deathbed Jacob named him first, his might and the firstfruits of his strength, yet declared him unstable as water, and said he would not excel. From him came the tribe of Reuben east of the Jordan.
