Why Joseph named him Manasseh: GOD HAS MADE ME FORGET MY HARDSHIP
His place under Jacob's blessing: THE ELDER, BLESSED WITH THE LEFT HAND
The subject was the firstborn son of Joseph, born in Egypt to Asenath before the famine. Joseph named him Manasseh, saying, God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father's house.
When Jacob was dying, Joseph brought the subject and his younger brother Ephraim to be blessed, and Jacob adopted them as his own, that they might be counted among the tribes of Israel like Reuben and Simeon.
Joseph set the subject, the elder, at Jacob's right hand, but Jacob crossed his arms, giving the greater blessing with his right hand to Ephraim, and blessing the subject with his left.
Though he objected, Joseph could not turn his father, who declared that the subject too would become a people and be great, but that his younger brother would be greater still.
The tribe of the subject grew large and received an inheritance on both sides of the Jordan, half in Gilead and Bashan to the east and half in the hill country to the west, a numerous and powerful tribe in Israel.

- We can learn to forget past hardship without forgetting God's mercy.
- The Lord's ordering of His people is His to decide, and it is good.
