The name his dying mother gave: BEN-ONI, SON OF MY SORROW
The name his father gave instead: BENJAMIN, SON OF THE RIGHT HAND
The subject was the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons and the only full brother of Joseph. His mother Rachel died giving him birth on the way to Ephrath; she named him Ben-oni, son of my sorrow, but his father called him Benjamin, son of the right hand.
After Joseph was sold into Egypt and believed dead, the subject became the special care of his father, who would not let him go down with his brothers, for he alone was left of Rachel's sons.
When the famine drove the brothers to Egypt, the governor, unknown to them as Joseph, demanded that the subject be brought. Jacob released him only under Judah's pledge of his own life for the boy's safety.
Joseph received them, seated the subject with a portion five times the others, then had his silver cup hidden in the subject's sack to test the brothers. When it was found and the subject was to be held, Judah offered himself in the boy's place.
At this Joseph could no longer restrain himself and made himself known, weeping upon the neck of the subject. From him came the tribe of Benjamin, which Jacob likened to a ravenous wolf, and which the LORD would keep as the beloved dwelling secure.
