What was done to her at Shechem: SEIZED AND DEFILED BY THE PRINCE
How her brothers answered the wrong: THE SWORD UPON THE WHOLE CITY
The subject was the daughter of Jacob by Leah, the one daughter named among his children. When Jacob had settled near the city of Shechem, she went out to visit the women of the land.
Shechem, son of Hamor the prince of the land, saw her, seized her, and defiled her; yet his soul was drawn to her, and he asked his father to get her for his wife.
Her brothers were grieved and angry that such a thing had been done in Israel. They answered with deceit, requiring the men of the city to be circumcised, saying only then could there be intermarriage between them.
While the men lay in pain, Simeon and Levi took their swords, killed every male, and plundered the city, taking the subject from Shechem's house. Jacob rebuked them for the trouble they had brought upon him.
The subject went down with the house of Jacob into Egypt and is named among those who came out of his loins. Her story stands as a grief woven into the record of the sons of Israel.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- The vulnerable deserve protection, not exposure to the world's dangers.
- Vengeance that answers wrong with slaughter compounds the evil.
- God's record does not hide the wounds and failures of His people.
