The counsel of the old men he rejected: SERVE THE PEOPLE AND THEY WILL SERVE YOU
His answer following the young men: MY LITTLE FINGER IS THICKER THAN MY FATHER'S WAIST
The subject, son of Solomon, came to Shechem to be made king over all Israel. The people, led by Jeroboam, asked him to lighten the heavy yoke of labor his father had laid on them.
He took three days to consider. The old men who had served Solomon counseled him to speak kindly and serve the people, but he forsook their advice and heeded the young men who had grown up with him.
He answered the people harshly, saying his father had chastised them with whips, but he would chastise them with scorpions. So ten tribes tore away under Jeroboam, and only Judah and Benjamin remained to the house of David.
This turn of events was of the LORD, to fulfill the word spoken against Solomon's idolatry. The subject would have made war to recover the north, but the LORD forbade it through the prophet Shemaiah.
When he and Judah forsook the law of the LORD, Shishak of Egypt came up and plundered the temple and palace. The subject and his princes humbled themselves, and the LORD did not destroy them, but he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.

- Harshness toward those you lead breeds rebellion, not respect.
- Prosperity untethered from seeking God ends in humiliation.
