What he cried against the north: THE LORD IS OUR GOD, AND WE HAVE NOT FORSAKEN HIM
Why Judah prevailed: THEY RELIED ON THE LORD, THE GOD OF THEIR FATHERS
The subject, son of Rehoboam and grandson of Solomon, became king of Judah in the days of the divided kingdom. His heart was not wholly true like David's, yet for David's sake the LORD kept a lamp burning in Jerusalem.
War broke out between the subject and Jeroboam king of Israel. Outnumbered two to one, the subject stood on Mount Zemaraim and called out to the northern tribes, reminding them that the kingdom had been given to the house of David by covenant of salt.
He rebuked them for driving out the priests of the LORD and setting up golden calves, and declared that Judah had not forsaken the LORD, whose priests still ministered and whose altar still burned. God was with them, and they should not fight against Him.
When Jeroboam set an ambush and Judah found the battle before and behind them, they cried to the LORD, the priests blew the trumpets, and God routed Israel before the subject and his men.
Judah prevailed because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers. Five hundred thousand of Israel fell, and the subject grew strong, though his reign was brief, only three years upon the throne.
