How he showed Jeroboam his future: TORE A NEW CLOAK INTO TWELVE PIECES
His later word against Jeroboam's house: IT WOULD BE SWEPT AWAY LIKE DUNG
The subject was a prophet of Shiloh in the days of Solomon. When Solomon turned to idols in his old age, the LORD sent the subject to meet Jeroboam, a capable young official, on the road.
The subject took the new cloak he was wearing, tore it into twelve pieces, and told Jeroboam to take ten, for the LORD would tear ten tribes from Solomon's son and give them to him, leaving one tribe to the house of David for David's sake.
He promised Jeroboam a sure and lasting house if he would walk in obedience to God as David had done.
But Jeroboam made golden calves and led Israel into sin. When his son fell ill, his wife came in disguise to the aged, blind subject, and God revealed to the prophet who she was.
The subject gave a hard word: because Jeroboam had done more evil than all before him, his house would be swept away like dung, the sick child would die and be mourned as the only one of his line to receive a proper burial, and Israel would in time be scattered. His prophecies of both the kingdom's division and the dynasty's fall came to pass.
