What he set up to keep the people north: TWO GOLDEN CALVES AT DAN AND BETHEL
The lie he told to the ten tribes: BEHOLD YOUR GODS WHO BROUGHT YOU UP
The subject was a mighty man of valor, an official over the labor of the house of Joseph. The prophet Ahijah met him and tore his cloak into twelve pieces, giving him ten, for the LORD would tear ten tribes from Solomon and give them to him.
God promised him a sure and lasting house if he would walk in obedience as David did. When Solomon sought to kill him, he fled to Egypt and returned to lead the northern tribes after Solomon's death.
Made king over Israel, he feared the people would return to the house of David if they went up to worship at Jerusalem. So he made two golden calves, set them in Dan and Bethel, and said, Behold your gods who brought you up out of Egypt.
He appointed a feast of his own and priests who were not Levites, and burned incense at the altar he had made. A man of God cried out against the altar, and when the subject stretched out his hand to seize him, his hand withered and the altar was torn.
He did not turn from his evil way, and this sin became the snare of the northern kingdom. The LORD sent word by Ahijah that his house would be swept away, and so it was, for he made Israel to sin.
