How far he restored the border: FROM LEBO-HAMATH TO THE SEA OF THE ARABAH
Why the LORD saved Israel by his hand: HE HAD NOT SAID HE WOULD BLOT OUT THE NAME OF ISRAEL
The subject, son of Jehoash and fourth of the house of Jehu, reigned over Israel in Samaria for forty-one years. He did evil in the sight of the LORD and did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
Yet under his hand Israel reached the height of its power. He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word the LORD had spoken through Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath-hepher.
For the LORD had seen the bitter affliction of Israel and that there was none to help. He had not said He would blot out the name of Israel, so He saved them by the hand of the subject, an undeserved mercy.
The prosperity of his reign bred complacency and injustice. In his days Amos thundered against the oppression of the poor and the false peace of Bethel, and Hosea began to prophesy against a people who forgot their God.
Amaziah the priest of Bethel accused Amos of conspiracy against the subject, but the prophet's word stood. The borders were wide and the barns were full, yet the kingdom was ripe for the judgment that would soon carry it away.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Prosperity is no proof of God's approval.
- The mercy that spares us is meant to lead us to repentance.
- Wide borders and full barns cannot hide a heart far from God.
