Years Jacob served for her: FOURTEEN YEARS
Name she gave her second son with her last breath: BEN-ONI, BUT JACOB CALLED HIM BENJAMIN
The subject, younger daughter of Laban, met Jacob at a well as she came with her father's sheep. Jacob loved her, and served seven years for her, which seemed to him but a few days because of his love.
Deceived on the wedding night, Jacob received her sister Leah first, and served seven more years for Rachel. She remained the wife he loved, though for long she was barren while Leah bore sons.
In her distress she cried to Jacob for children. In time God remembered her, and she bore Joseph, saying, God has taken away my reproach.
As Jacob's household journeyed toward Canaan, she bore a second son. In hard labor she named him Ben-oni, son of my sorrow, but Jacob called him Benjamin, and she died and was buried near Bethlehem.
Long after, the prophets pictured her weeping for her children, a lament taken up at the sorrow that fell on Bethlehem at the birth of the Messiah.
