The saying that arose from him: A MIGHTY HUNTER BEFORE THE LORD
The first city of his kingdom: BABEL, IN THE LAND OF SHINAR
The subject was a son of Cush, of the line of Ham, and the first man on earth to become a mighty one, a mighty hunter, so that it became a proverb, like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD.
The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, along with Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar, the plain where men gathered to build a city and a tower reaching to heaven, to make a name for themselves.
From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and Resen, founding the great cities that would rise as empires against God's people.
The tower of Babel, raised in defiance and pride, was the LORD's occasion to confuse the language of men and scatter them over the face of the earth, so the city was left unfinished.
The subject stands in Scripture as the first of the empire-builders, a picture of human power gathered to exalt itself apart from God, whose proud towers the LORD brings to nothing.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Human strength gathered to make a name for itself opposes God's glory.
- The proud tower built against heaven is scattered at the Lord's word.
- Empire and might apart from God rise only to be brought low.
