What he declared of David's house: YOUR THRONE SHALL BE ESTABLISHED FOREVER
His word after the parable: YOU ARE THE MAN
The subject was the prophet of David's court. When David desired to build a house for the LORD, the subject brought the LORD's answer: instead, God would build David a house, and establish his throne forever.
That covenant word pointed beyond Solomon to an everlasting kingdom, taken up later in the promise of the Messiah, the Son of David.
When David sinned in the matter of Bathsheba and Uriah, the subject came to him and told a parable of a rich man who seized a poor man's only ewe lamb. David's anger blazed against the man.
The subject answered, You are the man, and pronounced the LORD's judgment. David confessed, I have sinned against the LORD, and the subject assured him the LORD had put away his sin.
In David's old age the subject acted to secure the throne for Solomon against Adonijah's attempt, and he helped anoint Solomon king.
