Why the ark should never have been on a cart: IT WAS TO BE CARRIED BY THE LEVITES

When David set out to bring the ark of God up to the City of David, they placed it on a new cart drawn by oxen, and the subject and his brother, sons of Abinadab, guided it, with all Israel rejoicing before the LORD.
But the ark was meant to be carried on the shoulders of the Levites with poles, not hauled on a cart in the manner of the Philistines, and this the leaders had neglected.
When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and the subject put out his hand and took hold of the ark to steady it.
The anger of the LORD burned against him, and God struck him down there for his irreverence, and he died beside the ark of God.
David was angry and afraid, and called the place Perez-uzzah. He would not move the ark farther that day, but later brought it up rightly, carried by the Levites as the law had commanded, with sacrifice and great rejoicing.
