What they offered that God had not commanded: STRANGE FIRE BEFORE THE LORD
The word the LORD gave after their death: I WILL BE TREATED AS HOLY
The two were the eldest sons of Aaron, who with their father and seventy elders had gone up on Sinai and beheld the God of Israel, eating and drinking in His presence.
They were consecrated as priests to minister at the tabernacle, sharing in the highest privilege given to men, to serve before the LORD in His sanctuary.
But each took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.
Fire went out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Moses said this was what the LORD meant when He said He would be treated as holy by those who come near Him, and glorified before all the people.
Aaron held his peace. His sons were carried outside the camp in their tunics, and the priests were forbidden to mourn them publicly, lest they too die, for the anointing of the LORD was upon them.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Nearness to holy things demands the deepest reverence, not carelessness.
- God will be treated as holy by all who draw near to serve Him.
- Privilege in God's service is no license to worship on our own terms.
