Where he was clothed with the priesthood: ON MOUNT HOR, AS AARON DIED
How he sought God's guidance for Joshua: BY THE JUDGMENT OF THE URIM
The subject was the third son of Aaron. When his elder brothers Nadab and Abihu were struck down for offering unauthorized fire, he and his brother Ithamar carried on the ministry of the priesthood.
On Mount Hor, at the LORD's command, Aaron's priestly garments were taken from him and put on the subject, and there Aaron died; so the subject became high priest in his father's place.
He stood with Moses and later with Joshua, and by the judgment of the Urim he was to inquire of the LORD on behalf of the leader and the whole congregation.
After the conquest he helped Joshua divide the land among the tribes by lot at Shiloh, where the tabernacle was set up, and the inheritance of Israel was apportioned before the LORD.
The subject died and was buried in the hill country of Ephraim, and the high priesthood passed to his son Phinehas. His line held the sacred office through the generations of Israel.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Faithful service to God is often a matter of quietly carrying on a trust.
- Sacred office is received as a stewardship, not seized for oneself.
- Those who lead God's people should first inquire of the Lord.
