Why he would not sell to the king: THE LORD FORBID THE INHERITANCE OF MY FATHERS
The false charge that condemned him: HE HAS CURSED GOD AND THE KING
The subject owned a vineyard in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab king of Israel. The king desired it for a vegetable garden and offered a better vineyard or its worth in money.
But the subject refused, saying, The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers, for the land was a sacred trust in Israel, not to be sold away from the family line.
Ahab went home sullen and refused to eat. Jezebel his wife told him to arise and be merry, promising to get him the vineyard. She wrote letters in the king's name, proclaimed a fast, and set two worthless men to accuse the subject of cursing God and the king.
On this false testimony the subject was taken outside the city and stoned to death, and Ahab rose to take possession of the vineyard.
But the LORD sent Elijah to meet Ahab there with a word of doom on his whole house, and in the place where dogs licked the blood of the subject, they would lick the blood of Ahab; and so it came to pass upon that house.
