What he made from his mother's silver: A CARVED IMAGE AND A METAL IDOL
Why he thought himself blessed: NOW I KNOW THE LORD WILL PROSPER ME, FOR I HAVE A LEVITE AS PRIEST
In the days when there was no king in Israel and everyone did what was right in his own eyes, the subject dwelt in the hill country of Ephraim. He had stolen eleven hundred pieces of silver from his mother and, hearing her curse, returned it.
His mother dedicated the silver to the LORD, and from it were made a carved image and a metal idol, which the subject set in his house. He made a shrine, fashioned an ephod and household gods, and ordained one of his sons as priest.
A wandering Levite came seeking a place, and the subject hired him for ten pieces of silver a year, his clothing, and his food, saying now he knew the LORD would prosper him because he had a Levite as priest.
But warriors of the tribe of Dan, searching for territory, came upon his house. They took the idol, the ephod, and the priest, and when the subject protested, they warned him to be silent lest he lose his life.
So the Danites carried off the gods the subject had made and set them up in their new city, and this private worship of one man's devising became the idolatry of a whole tribe for generations.

- Worship shaped to our own liking is no worship of God.
- A religion of silver and hired priests cannot secure His favor.
- One household's compromise can corrupt a whole people.
