The subject was a man of Zorah, of the tribe of Dan, whose wife was barren. The angel of the LORD appeared to her, promising a son who would be a Nazirite from the womb and would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines.
When she told him, the subject prayed that the man of God would come again and teach them what they should do with the boy who was to be born.
God heard him, and the angel came again to his wife in the field, and she ran to fetch her husband, who came and asked the angel how they should raise the child, and what his manner of life should be.
The subject offered a young goat, and as the flame went up from the altar, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame while they watched and fell on their faces.
Realizing it was the angel of the LORD, the subject feared they would die because they had seen God; but his wife wisely answered that if the LORD had meant to kill them, He would not have accepted their offering or shown them these things. In time she bore Samson, and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.
