Terms of the vow before battle: WHATEVER COMES FIRST FROM MY DOORS
The word that tried Ephraim at the fords: SHIBBOLETH
The subject, a mighty man of valor and son of a harlot, was driven out by his brothers and denied a share in his father's house. He dwelt in the land of Tob, and worthless men gathered to him.
When Ammon made war on Gilead, the elders who had cast him out came to fetch him, and made him head and chief. The subject first sent messengers to Ammon pleading Israel's cause and the LORD's judgment, but the king would not listen.
The Spirit of the LORD came upon the subject, and he vowed that whatever came first from the doors of his house to meet him on his return he would offer up, if the LORD gave him the victory. The LORD gave Ammon into his hand, and twenty cities fell.
Returning to Mizpah, the subject was met by his only child, his daughter, with timbrels and dancing. He tore his clothes, yet held to his word; she asked two months to bewail her state, and it became a custom in Israel to lament for her four days a year.
When Ephraim quarreled and made war on him, the subject took the fords of the Jordan and tested each man by the word Shibboleth; those who said Sibboleth were struck down. He judged Israel six years, and later witnesses name him among the faithful.
