What the Lord said of her choice: MARY HAS CHOSEN THE GOOD PORTION
What her anointing prepared: HE SAID IT WAS FOR HIS BURIAL
The subject, sister of Martha and Lazarus of Bethany, sat at the Lord's feet listening to his teaching while Martha was busy serving. When Martha complained, Jesus said Mary had chosen the good portion, which would not be taken from her.
When her brother Lazarus died, the subject fell at Jesus' feet weeping, and the Lord, deeply moved, wept with her before raising Lazarus from the tomb.
Six days before the Passover, at a supper in Bethany, the subject took a pound of very costly ointment of pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped them with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance.
When some, led by Judas, objected that it might have been sold for the poor, Jesus said, Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my burial.
He declared that wherever the gospel is preached in all the world, what she had done would be told in memory of her, a witness of extravagant love poured out on the Lord.
