The charge he leveled against Moses: YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR, ALL ARE HOLY
How the LORD distinguished the true priest: THE EARTH OPENED ITS MOUTH
The subject was a Levite of the house of Kohath who, with Dathan, Abiram, and two hundred fifty leaders of the congregation, rose up against Moses and Aaron.
They charged that Moses and Aaron had exalted themselves, saying all the congregation were holy and the LORD was among them all. But the subject, a Levite, was in truth reaching for the priesthood given only to Aaron.
Moses told them to take censers and stand before the LORD, that He might show whom He had chosen. He warned the people to move away from the tents of the rebels.
The ground split apart and swallowed the subject, his households, and all that belonged to them, and they went down alive into the pit, while fire from the LORD consumed the two hundred fifty who offered incense.
Their censers were hammered into a covering for the altar, a sign to Israel that no outsider should presume to burn incense before the LORD. Later Scripture holds up his rebellion as a warning.
