What the donkey saw that he did not: THE ANGEL OF THE LORD WITH A DRAWN SWORD
The counsel that led Israel into sin: SNARE THEM AT PEOR WITH MOAB'S WOMEN
The subject, a diviner of Pethor by the Euphrates, was summoned by Balak king of Moab to curse Israel, who had come up out of Egypt and camped in the plains of Moab. Balak promised him great honor and reward.
God told the subject not to go and not to curse the people, for they were blessed. When the princes came again with greater honor, God let him go but warned him to speak only what He would tell him; yet God's anger burned against his going.
On the way the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing with a drawn sword and turned aside three times. The subject beat her, until the LORD opened her mouth to rebuke him and opened his own eyes to see the angel who would have slain him.
Four times Balak brought him to curse Israel, and four times the subject opened his mouth and blessed them instead, declaring he could not go beyond the word of the LORD. He even foretold a Star that would come out of Jacob.
Though his mouth blessed, the subject counseled Moab to seduce Israel into sin at Peor, and a plague fell on the people. He was afterward slain by the sword when Israel warred on Midian, and Scripture makes him a byword for the prophet who loved the wages of unrighteousness.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- A gifted tongue is worthless when the heart loves reward.
- God can bless His people through the mouth that came to curse.
- The wages of unrighteousness lead only to ruin.
