Why he sent for Balaam: HE DREADED ISRAEL, TOO MANY TO FIGHT
What he got for all his sacrifices: BLESSING UPON ISRAEL, FOUR TIMES OVER
The subject was king of Moab in the days when Israel, having come up out of Egypt, camped in the plains of Moab across the Jordan. He was overcome with dread, for the people were many, and he said they would lick up all around him as an ox licks up the grass.
He sent messengers to Balaam of Pethor with fees for divination, begging him to come and curse Israel, believing that whomever Balaam cursed was cursed.
God forbade Balaam to curse the people, for they were blessed, but at length allowed him to go under strict command to speak only what God gave him.
Three times the subject led Balaam to high places overlooking Israel and built seven altars with sacrifices, and three times, to his fury, Balaam opened his mouth and blessed Israel instead of cursing them.
A fourth time Balaam foretold a Star that would rise out of Jacob to crush Moab. The subject's anger burned, and he sent Balaam away without reward, having learned that no curse can prevail against the people the LORD has blessed.
