Why he became mighty: HE ORDERED HIS WAYS BEFORE THE LORD HIS GOD
The one warning against his reign: THE PEOPLE STILL FOLLOWED CORRUPT PRACTICES
The subject was the son of Uzziah, and governed the land while his father lived as a leper apart, then reigned in his own right sixteen years in Jerusalem.
He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD as his father had done, yet he learned from his father's error and did not presume to enter the temple to burn incense.
He built the upper gate of the house of the LORD, did much building on the wall of Ophel, raised cities in the hill country, and forts and towers in the forests.
He went to war against the Ammonites and prevailed, and they paid him a heavy tribute of silver, wheat, and barley for three years.
The record says the subject became mighty because he ordered his ways before the LORD his God. Yet the people continued in corrupt practices, a decline his faithfulness could steady but not cure, and the harder days of his son Ahaz lay ahead.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Strength grows in the life that steadily orders its ways before God.
- We can learn from a parent's failure and refuse to repeat it.
- A faithful leader is a blessing, though he cannot force a people's heart.
