What he did in his distress: SACRIFICED HIS OWN SON IN THE FIRE
The sign given though he refused it: BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL CONCEIVE
The subject, king of Judah, did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD as his father David had. He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, made molten images for the Baals, and even burned his own children as an offering.
When Syria and Israel came up against Jerusalem, the subject was afraid, and his heart and the heart of his people shook like trees in the wind. The prophet Isaiah came to steady him with the promise that the threat would fail.
Isaiah told him to ask the LORD for a sign, high as heaven or deep as the grave, but the subject refused under a show of piety, unwilling to trust God. So the LORD Himself gave the sign: a virgin would conceive and bear a son called Immanuel, God with us.
Rather than rely on the LORD, the subject stripped the temple and palace of silver and gold and sent it to the king of Assyria for help, becoming his servant and inviting his oppression.
He saw an altar at Damascus, sent its pattern to the priest, and had one built to replace the LORD's altar. At the last he shut the doors of the house of the LORD, cut up its vessels, and set up altars on every corner of Jerusalem.
EYES ONLYRestricted // Sacred Record
- Refusing to trust God, dressed as humility, is still unbelief.
- Fear that runs to worldly powers instead of God invites their yoke.
- Even to a faithless king God can give the promise of Immanuel.
