What he did that provoked the siege: WITHHELD TRIBUTE AND SOUGHT EGYPT'S HELP
Why the whole kingdom fell: THEY HAD SINNED AGAINST THE LORD THEIR GOD
The subject was the last king of the northern kingdom of Israel, having come to the throne by conspiracy against his predecessor. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, though not as the kings before him.
He became a vassal of Shalmaneser king of Assyria and paid tribute, but then conspired against him, sending envoys to the king of Egypt and withholding the tribute.
For this the king of Assyria seized him and shut him in prison, then came up against the whole land and besieged Samaria for three years.
In the ninth year of the subject, Samaria fell, and the king of Assyria carried Israel away into exile, settling them among the cities of the Medes and Persia.
The record explains that this happened because the people had sinned against the LORD who brought them out of Egypt, feared other gods, and would not listen to the prophets He sent, until the LORD removed them from His sight.

- A nation that will not heed God's prophets stores up its own downfall.
- Divided loyalties and worldly alliances cannot save what sin has doomed.
- God is patient across centuries, but His warnings are not empty.
