What he asked of Pilate: THE BODY OF JESUS
Whose tomb received the Lord: HIS OWN NEW TOMB, CUT IN THE ROCK
The subject was a rich man of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, good and righteous, who had not consented to their decision against Jesus, and who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God.
A disciple of Jesus, though secretly for fear of the authorities, he took courage after the crucifixion and went boldly to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.
Pilate granted the request. The subject took the body down, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud with the spices Nicodemus brought, and laid it in his own new tomb, cut in the rock, where no one had yet been laid.
He rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and so the Lord was buried honorably, fulfilling the word that he was with a rich man in his death.
The subject and Nicodemus, once cautious, came into the open at the cross, honoring the Lord when many had fled.
