The subject was a commander of Israel's army when a young prophet, sent by Elisha, poured oil on his head and anointed him king to strike down the house of Ahab and avenge the blood of the LORD's prophets.
He mounted his chariot and drove furiously to Jezreel. He shot King Joram through the heart, and when Jezebel looked down painted and defiant, at his word her own eunuchs threw her from the window, and the dogs devoured her as Elijah had foretold.
He cut off the seventy sons of Ahab, the officials and priests of that house, and all who remained, leaving none, and so wiped out the dynasty as the word of the LORD had said.
By a ruse he gathered all the worshipers of Baal into their temple as if for a great sacrifice, then had them put to the sword, and destroyed the pillar and house of Baal, purging that worship out of Israel.
The LORD commended him for carrying out what was right against the house of Ahab and promised his sons the throne to the fourth generation. Yet the subject was not careful to walk in the law of the LORD, for he did not turn from the golden calves of Jeroboam.
