What Jehu asked as they met: IS YOUR HEART TRUE TO MY HEART AS MINE IS TO YOURS?
The lasting command he gave his house: DRINK NO WINE, BUILD NO HOUSE, SOW NO SEED; DWELL IN TENTS
The subject, son of Rechab, was a man of stern zeal for the LORD in the days when Jehu rose to purge the house of Ahab and the worship of Baal from Israel.
As Jehu rode toward Samaria, he met the subject coming to meet him and asked if his heart was true. When the subject answered that it was, Jehu gave him his hand, took him up into the chariot, and said, Come and see my zeal for the LORD.
Together they entered the temple of Baal, and the subject stood with Jehu as the worshipers of Baal were gathered and destroyed and their temple torn down and defiled.
The subject also laid upon his descendants a lasting discipline: to drink no wine, build no houses, plant no fields, but to dwell in tents as sojourners, that they might remain a people set apart.
Generations later, in the days of Jeremiah, the Rechabites still kept his command, refusing wine even when tested. God held them up as a rebuke to unfaithful Judah and promised that the subject's house would never lack a man to stand before Him.
